Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is a rare autoimmune disorder in which a person’s immune system damages the nerves, causing muscle weakness and sometimes paralysis. GBS can cause symptoms that last for a few weeks to several years. Most people recover fully, but some have permanent nerve damage. Most cases usually start a few days or weeks following a respiratory or gastrointestinal viral infection. Emerging data indicate that COVID-19 can trigger GBS and other autoimmune neurological diseases necessitating vigilance for early diagnosis and therapy initiation.
Does your medical staff need the training to help you diagnose GBS? Here are some of the learning objectives that our faculty can cover in a 1-hour CME lecture:
- Describe the immunologic basis of GBS
- Recognize typical signs, symptoms, and laboratory and electrophysiologic findings of GBS
- Utilize appropriate treatment and supportive care in patients with GBS
- Discuss the incidence of GBS in COVID-19 patients
