It is estimated that almost 1.2 million people live with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)
infection in the United States, and nearly 13% are unaware of their infection. Young people
are the most likely to be unaware of their disease. Among people aged 13-24 with HIV, an
estimated half of them don’t know. Knowledge of HIV infection status, behavior change,
and antiretroviral therapy (ART) all prevent HIV transmission. Persons who achieve and
maintain viral suppression (achieved by most persons within six months of starting ART) can
live long, healthy lives and pose effectively no risk of HIV transmission to their sexual partners.
Primary care physicians are taking a more significant role in caring for patients infected with
HIV, so they need to be up to date on current guidelines in the prevention and treatment of
HIV.
Does your medical staff need an update on the diagnosis and treatment of HIV/AIDS? Here are some of the learning objectives that our faculty can cover in a 1-hour CME lecture:
- Recognize acute HIV clinical manifestations and screen and test for HIV infection
timely - Cite the new therapies available for HIV and their expected outcomes
- Compare old vs. new treatments
- Manage HIV patients appropriately
- Define the role of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), including the identification of high-risk patient populations for appropriate use
